Buchla "Flute" Performance

Note on the patch sheet: All of the settings are really up the the user and how they want their flute to sound. The only thing critical to the flute-ish operation is the envelope follower out to amplitude and timbre. This is just how I had it set up when I filmed the video, except my sequencer in the video was doing octaves and 5ths rather than the ascending pentatonic scale seen in the patch s...

Here is the follow up video I promised, briefly explaining and demonstrating the "flute" patch I discovered recently. This simple patch involves an external input / preamp module with an envelope follower, an oscillator with timbre control / wave shaping and a vca. Adding a noise source as a secondary sound, opening it with a similar envelope, can really add to the illusion that its a flute. I ...

beautiful concept!
Thank you so much! That IDEIN module is very fun to play with, I’ll probably employ this technique again some day!
Awesome video! What controller are you using?
The mic I’m using to input breath control is a microphone from Critter and Guitari. Battery powered and fairly cheap!
Congratulations sir! You have mastered your instrument and unlocked the next bonus: 'Collaboration' !
Mastery is around a corner that may not even exist, but I’m more than happy to continue learning, especially from others! Thank you!
That felt natural and even holistic!
I appreciate that a lot, and thank you for checking it out!
This was brilliant, great stuff!
Thank you!
Would be such a good videogame track for a dark dungeon or night swamp area. So sick
thank you so much!!
Beautiful patch -amazing sound - loved it!
Thank you I really appreciate you watching/listening!
Such a great setup and performance Aaron! Amazing work!!
Thank you so much for checking it out!
That was fantastic! Can you run the trigger for the sequence advance through a +/- attenuator to play with threshold?
To be honest I’m not 100% on sure how pulses behave so I really don’t know forsure but probably, that’s a good idea. Thank you for watching! I’m continuing to explore with this patch and I can try that out to see if I can dial in a threshold.
Nice
Thank you for checking it out!
Wow, that is extremely flutey. well done!
Thank you so much for checking it out! I was really pleased with it.
Great stuff Aaron!
Thank you so much for watching Patrick! Very excited to start sharing more like this.

Thank you for watching Wes!! I really appreciate that. I hope you are well, and still creating!
Wow! That is F**king wild Aaron!!! Super impressed by that patch. The microphone is a very cool design.
Thanks a lot man! I love this mic, its so simple to use. I agree its a great design. I was sold on it instantly.
Verry interesting! Man I wish I had time to build those things like that! I did experiment with Pure data.... But computer was too limited...!
Thank you so much! I have never tried Pure Data. Is it like Max? You could most likely easily recreate this using VCV rack. Would just need an audio interface to bring a mic into the computer environment. Have you played with VCV before? There is another program called Cardinal that is a virtual modular synth too. I have not tried that but heard good things.
@@AaronGoldbergMusic , Hey Aaron! Yeah, you did a nice job with recreating the flute! What I found most beautyfull, is how much expression you got out of the self-build breath controller!
@@AaronGoldbergMusic . Yes Pure Data is like Max XP, but than free? If I remeber correctly! My problem is, I always run into limitations...! With pure Data i've tried to create the basic controls and waves for a On NOISE based Synthezer, which then again. I wanted to combine them with some ideas I had created with creating sounds out of Math Only! The Idea of the noise based sythesyzer was to be able to make really natural sounding sounds and less repetitive sounding samples and synths!
@@novardifunkegenaamdkaiser3491 Thanks a lot! I was so happy with the level of expression capable with this simple technique. In the main body of the video, I have the timbre cv amount very low, but if I raise it higher, there is even more variety available at higher amplitudes.
@@novardifunkegenaamdkaiser3491 This sounds like a really cool idea and I would definitely be interested to see it if you ever pull it off in the way you hope!
Such a cool tone out of that
Thank you man!
Cool vibes. Listened to this while I did my taxes
Thank you so much!
Digging the beat. I like the change ups the drums go through, and the softness of the rhodes hits nice
Thank you! so glad I got to upload this
You can load stuff into it right? Like from a laptop or just plug a guitar or synth into it yeah, play into it then make a sample right?
Yes exactly! It has a 3.5mm input which allows you to sample anything you want
Very cool workaround with the skull!!
Thank you! Just the right size and weight!
Could you write your steps in a comment? The video description hides some of it
1.Find a loop you want to copy 2. Hold the shift key (the chompi key) 3. Select the green lit black key 4. Select the sample you want to copy 5. Select where you want the copy to go (In the case of copying directly to the looper, you want to press the blue play/pause button) 6. Press the chompi key to confirm. (Or the green kit key again to cancel) 7. Your loop is now perfectly in the loop buffer
love it
thank you so much!
This is great!!

Loved the beat. Your setup is super cool and it's incredible that you know how to operate it to get the sounds that you want. Always love listening to your jams.
Thank you so much Topcat!! In the end its not that hard to operate because you are the one who patched it all up. It's a system of your own design. The complicated it gets however, does call for more practice!

hello man, i amhalfway through and loving your stream! just i didn't really get if the chompi can record sounds that you make on the spot and let you use it as asample, that would be cool. can it do that?
Oh yes chompi can absolutely record samples on the fly! It’s one of the main functions! I think I mainly use the pre loaded samples in this, though I do attempt to chop some songs up on it to some success haha
@@AaronGoldbergMusic thanks man for the prompt reply. I mean 600$ is a pretty high price however this is a precious little toy, and i would love the Portability of it. I can see myself recording sounds in the nature maybe and doing something cool with it.
@@gabrielemarcelli4530 $600 is definitely a high price for such a limited instrument. I think that price is more likely a product of this being their first instrument and it being expensive to get off the ground as a new company. They are also utilizing the Daisy platform witch will allow for alternate firmwares so this device can become something completely new, and it’s build in fx, if tweaked right in the code would be a surprisingly powerful FX unit. I think $600 for where it is right now is a lot, but I’m happy to be an early adopter for a new company in hopes they continue to improve the instrument and improve as a company. I’m in their discord actively along with many others offering input on how to improve the current firmware, along with giving ideas for alternate firmware and the team is very responsive!
Love it! Such fun!
Thank you so much man! Happy new year! And hope you had a great Christmas!

I’m loving the happy accidents I get with this thing. Such a great tool for when I don’t know where to start with a new song
I don't have a musical background.is this easy to use for beginners
If you are just trying to have some fun making sounds / little beats without getting too deep into production, this is definitely easy to use and will give you fun for a very long time. I am having a blast with chompi and was able to become comfortable with the interface in a day or 2. It is limited though and some other cheaper devices can make more full songs with more precision
Loving this good work, mines coming Thursday. 😊

Thank you for watching / listening!
Very inspiring video! I’ve been playing all sorts of instruments my whole life, but bought a Chompi as my first sampler. I found a lot of inspiration seeing how you used yours in this video, thanks! If you make more Chompi content I’ll be watching :)
I’m so glad that this video was able to inspire ways of using the chompi! And I’m even more glad that you have entered the sampling world after years of playing! Sampling is a truly amazing tool and I think the chompi team made a wonderful intro to sampling instrument. With future firmware updates, this things capabilities and strengths will only grow!
At this price point, it is more about addressing what the Chompi lacks. Cause it lacks a lot of useful things. And it is fairly limited for that horrendous price. Not even a screen, MIDI capabilities or synth engine…as far as I’m concerned, this thing is a miss. An absolute miss. Heck. Get an iPad and GarageBand got you covered way past that overpriced toy!
That’s fair! For me it’s more than worth it to have a standalone device like this. (One that doesn’t bombard me with other notifications, or have a screen) Some of the things you don’t like about it, are selling points for me. Again, what people are willing to spend money on differs from person to person and it’s totally fair to think this is not worth it. There is also an active community on discord working with the chompi team to make new firmwares and updates to the current firmware! If this video helped you decide you don’t want it, then I’m glad it helped clarify that for you.
@@AaronGoldbergMusic thanks for the amazingly comprehensive answer. Kudos for being that patient! I hear a lot about the Discord community, the way the team tries its best. And I can totally get behind the philosophy of the device. Heck, I own the pricey DatoDUO that won’t ever get no firmware. But there are quirks and dead-ends with the Chompi. The team don’t oversell it, which is a bit of a bummer if it’s that powerful. And the price tag is…well…it’s pricey. I own the op1 Field, which is way more pricey than that. But on a per-function basis, the op1f is still more bang for your buck. I’m actually glad the Chompi got made. It’s a great tool for kids. But again. At this price point, it is not fairly priced. They spent money on sourcing faceplates when loads of people asked for MIDI implementation, they advertised inclusion when many people (me included) wanted a fair price to purchase units and use them in schools. It’s a miss. A great tool, but a miss. I do hope they pick up the ball they dropped and try to make right by the product. They probably need to communicate more, advertise the future firmwares more……and probably need to be more on point about their forecasts - they just missed the Xmas window, which would have make for more income and, incidentally, more development. I’m glad to see people having a blast since the Chompi is, for now, quite an unique tool in the market. But it’s now just a matter of months before the next best thing just wipes it out because of poor development and poorly skilled team - which, again, is probably great…but a bit too much for many pros. Thanks for the amazing reply. You most definitely earned my sub just for being that cool and humanely positive! Cheers. And happy new year!
@@Studio_4to1 I definitely hear you and can agree with a lot of your points myself. I hope that after this initial run, they are able to not only improve the product, but hopefully even sell it for less. This is an early adopter price, I know I was paying for a possible flop. Which for me, it’s not a flop, but I can see how it missed the mark in a lot of ways for you. I wonder if they can even do special pricing for music schools if they are successful enough at this price point. That would be awesome to get this into more kids hands. But honestly, there will probably be a cheaper alternative for kids to learn on before they get to that point of being able to offer special pricing for schools. As you already said, iPads exist and extremely powerful free music apps exist. I’m also not a marketing major nor a product development specialist, so all of that is speculation. I don’t know what’s realistic, nor what the chompi team wants to do. But I’m glad I have it, and I appreciate the conversation around the topic, which will always only bring positive change. Thank you for subscribing. Cheers and Happy New Year to you!
What instrument is that? Looks awesome
This is CHOMPI! It’s a really fun sampler / looper with built in FX. I backed it in kickstarter earlier this year and it just arrived last week!
Chompi is one of the biggest let down of 2023. Just my opinion, I know. But it’s way overpriced for what it does, is way too complicated for kids to operate and misses all the basic options you’d expect from that price bracket. Which results in a weirdly positioned option in the samplers market. 600€ is way too pricey and it’s a shame cause it was one of the most promising gear on paper. Their team is somewhat dedicated but doesn’t properly communicate - instead, they heavily rely on their community on Discord so they don’t have to develop things furthermore. Weirdest release ever. Glad to see some content about it. We need to make the Chompi what it is supposed to be : a great sampler.
@@Studio_4to1 I’m my opinion the K.O. II from Teenage Engineering takes “flop of the year” by a long shot. This is this companies first project, it’s biggest problems can be fixed with firmware. The K.O. II comes from a well established company that prides themselves on design, and engineering. That device arrived broken for me, and many others. It’s a shame. I hope they learned from that quality control mistake. And I hope you can give small start ups a bit more wiggle room in their efforts to get off the ground. They have to start somewhere. I have my gripes with chompi forsure, but hoping their active community and team on discord will address those things sooner rather than later. As I continue to have more experience with the instrument and the chompi community / team, I will keep being open and honest about my feelings about it. Cheers, and happy new year!
@@AaronGoldbergMusic happy new year to you too! Gotta agree with you on the EP-133. I’m more than 5000€ into TE ecosystem. And each and every single one of my purchases ended-up with problems. It culminated with 2 DOA EP-133. Broken fader on both. Next to no CS. TE is now marked down as an unreliable company by most audio pros. And apart from some fanboys trying to rationalize their purchases, everyone in the market for electronic gear knows that TE’s QC and CS is horrendous. So yeah. TE is the biggest let down of the year for sure. You can quote me on that! But then again. The Chompi and its weird marketing has been a problem since the start. Advocating an open source platform so you can make profit off of your customers is no better than TE making their customers beta testers. Using words like « inclusive » for some pricey faceplates no-one asked for (and just because a great margin can be made out of it), « child-friendly » design for a 600€ toy (which is, by no means, a reasonable price at that point), « for the pros » options (but no clock, no screen, and no alternative firmware from the start) and « in stock in November » when it’s still not available past Xmas proves, to the very least, that they too botched down their release. And that past the instant hype, it turned out to be a fair let down. Especially considering how many money was raised. The Discord community is trying to rationalize their purchase, just as TE customers do. It’s ok to do so. It’s ok to try and help. And, as a side note, believe you me when I say I try to support little actors as much as I financially can. Glou Glou, Sonicware, OTO, etc. The problem with Chompi is that they spent money on the wrong options, marketed wrong and made a couple of decisions that were not 600€ justifiable. The development didn’t cost them that much - it is pretty much a slightly updated SK-1 with a modernized workflow. And, according to their communication, most of their money went into tracing components, production costs and faceplates. Which, again, is ok 100%. But not for a 600€ toy. In 2024, 600€ will buy you a very capable iPad and some very useful apps. Heck. For 600€, GarageBand only is worth 10 times the fun for a kid. The Chompi stays on my watchlist. And I’m very curious about what’s next to come. But if they keep that pace and attitude, it’s not gonna go far. I’ll be on the lookout for your content, tho. Might help me get a better understanding of what I’m missing! Cheers! (Oh, btw, love your channel!)
@@Studio_4to1 so it's simultaneously to "limited"...and complicated, at the same time? It's also specifically marketed as NOT being a kid-friendly toy. Sounds like you just under-researched & didn't know what you were getting into, and then never gave it a proper chance.

$600 of crap. No thanks.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and is looking for different things out of music gear. For what it does I think it’s worth it. But I’m not looking to spend money on one thing that I will make all of my music on. I’m interested in trying new things and supporting small companies. Thank you for watching!
@@AaronGoldbergMusic So am I. I have more hardware synths than I can count to prove it, and I know, as I'm sure you do, that you can buy something with WAY more bang for the $600 ludicrous price. I mean, seriously $600. For example you could get a Deepmind for less than that. Compare the ability, spec and functionality and tell me that the toy Chompi is good value at $600! Its not. It's pitched at an insane price point and, as of yet is still unreleased. Flop city here it comes.
@@-Deena. I can see where your hang up is for this device. I don’t think that every piece of gear has to be the most bang for its buck. If that is the most important thing thing by all means I understand and agree there are much more capable devices for less money. Also, I don’t really care whether people like it or not because I bought it for myself. I am sharing this stuff so anyone else who got one or is thinking about it can see it in use. I have no stake in whether or not chompi succeeds. Though personally, I think it’s a great device and I hope they do find success and continue to improve upon an already enjoyable instrument.
@@AaronGoldbergMusic I am just expressing my view. I have lots of synths that my fellow syth heads despise but I love! I get odd looks when I still use my original Kraft 1, as It is excellent for bass lines, in my view. If Chompi succeeds or not I think will come down to the mad $600 price tag, for what it is. If it fails it might make future new manufacturers more aware that value for money and spec are more important than design aesthetics.
@@-Deena. I’ll change statement from “I think it’s worth it”, to “its worth it for me”. I’m getting more than what I expected out of this instrument. Most importantly, it sounds like you know what you like and that’s a great thing! I’m glad you are still finding fun in the things you have.

@@AaronGoldbergMusic +1 for shortform! I kinda skimmed through to try and find some useful tricks 😀
Man how do you get the drum loop samples into a perfect loop on the looper? Every time i try it sounds jittery towards the end, like i missed the mark or something
Yo! If you hold the CHOMPI key, it is the shift function. Hold shift, and then hit the green lit key on the right hand side (It’s in between a red and blue lit key). That is the copy function. So hold chompi, hit the green key. Then releasing chompi you can now send that loop to any other key. In this case we want to send it to the loop buffer, so hit the blue play key. Then hit chompi to save. Now you have your drum loop perfectly in the looper.
WOW! So helpful haha I was just wondering this same thing
its such a great little trick. Im hoping that in future firmware updates they allow the ability to copy the loop into the buffer more than once. For example, loading a drum loop in twice so the phrase length is longer@@AnsonPavlov
